Why Continual Improvement?

Leading an organization is like a “choose your own adventure” book, except you can’t go back and do over a choice, nor can you peek to see the outcomes of the choices you make.  Because you don’t know what will happen, we often default to the status quo to avoid the uncertainty of taking a new step.

Culturally, we validate this decision with adages like “why break it if it isn’t broken?”, and “the devil you know…”.  Let’s face it, adages prevail because there is some truth. I.e., there are certainly times and places where it doesn’t pay to muck with the current situation.

At the same time, businesses are in a competition, striving to be the first, best or right choice over the alternatives. Staying in the same place makes it easy for others to overtake. Moreover, “what got you here won’t necessarily get you where you are going”. We hope these ideas are ones you can embrace when improving your organization.  However, even if none work for you, the most important takeaway of this blog is how important it is to continually work towards getting better. It’s that effort which gives your organization the chance of still being around in 15 years.
