If Wishes Were Horses

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

My dad used to say that to me a lot as a kid. I used to think he was implying that wishes don’t come true, because I never saw a beggar on a horse.

Now having worked and observed people for many years, I wonder if my dad wasn’t trying to say something more profound.

It often seems to be the case that the people who are always making wishes are not out there making their wishes come true.  Instead, they are waiting for the miracle that rarely (if ever) occurs.

When more time spent wishing equals less time doing, it isn’t surprising when the wishes don’t come true.

Interestingly, I also like the quote by Paul Coehlo, author:

We must never stop dreaming. Dreams provide nourishment for the soul, just as a meal does for the body.

Whether wishing or dreaming, having a vision for the future brings hope and joy and gives people something to look forward to and work toward.

The morale of my story is that while wishing and dreaming is where it all starts, only the wisher who takes action can make his dreams come true.

Am I alone in this observation? What do you think?
