The Benefits of a “Snow Day”

I have a confession to make:  Yesterday I took a snow day.

Not really by choice or by plan.  It was forced on me because of a huge snowfall that caused my kids’ school to close, but I have to say, I highly recommend it. While hanging out with the kids building snowmen and sleigh riding, I had fun. Fun being one of the core values of LoveHR, we should be having it all the time.  But like many companies going through fast growth and change, we got busier over the last few months, but not more fun.

Early in my career, I worked with a Vancouver based consulting practice, and I have never forgotten the “Sailing Days” which the owners made a point of. Every now and then on a beautiful summer day when the sun was streaming in our windows and deadlines weren’t imminent, the boss would call for an afternoon on the water. We would all head on errands to pack a picnic, beverages, etc. and meet at the marina as soon as possible thereafter.  Vancouver is a wonderful city, and there’s nothing more amazing than being out on the water with the sun sparkling as you skim over the waves. Those afternoons rejuvenated my commitment to projects, clients and the company, glued lifelong friendships amongst the “crew”, and fired up our creativity and passion for the work.  The following days, I was always bursting with energy, so my clients got the benefits of those stolen afternoons as well.

Yesterday, as I sat with chilly wet feet beside a snowman and my kids, I committed to rediscovering fun at LoveHR and sharing some of our efforts in making it happen.

Let the fun (and creativity, commitment, and rejuvenation) begin.
