What does it mean to “build culture”?

Building culture means you take steps to promote and facilitate the culture you want to have in your company. Practically speaking, there are judgments about better and worse cultures, so choose wisely which type of culture you want to create.  From my vantage point (and putting aside my own opinions on good cultures (fun, open, fair, lego blocs buildingrespectful, honest, achievement oriented, flexible), at the very least, a company culture needs to be intentionally designed and aligned with the goals your organization is striving for.

How to create culture is another blog entirely, but the first couple steps involve figuring out what kind of company culture you need and want based on your own behaviours.  It helps if you believe that culture is a competitive advantage which sets you apart from your competition, but if you are not quite there, hopefully you can see it is one of the few aspects of business that other companies would find it impossible to replicate.

Come back next week and we will talk about some of the practical ways you can build culture every day in your organization.
