Why should I care about organizational culture?

In my opinion, there are 5 reasons to care about your company’s organizational culture:

  1. People make decisions about which companies to join on the basis of the company’s reputation for how it treats people. How you treat people is a key component of organizational culture.
  2. Culture is also a key factor in determining how much employees will like working with you, and as such, companies with poor organizational culture will have higher turnover and thus spend more on recruiting.
  3. Organizational culture impacts how happy your employees are, and all things being equal, happy employees are generally more productive than unhappy employees. They also show up for work on time, work longer and harder, smile more, and help each other out more which means your customers will get better services and products and you will have an easier time managing your employees.
  4. Your organization’s culture exists whether you like it or not. Like any other living thing, if it is cared for and nurtured, it will flourish. If it is ignored and neglected, it will either wilt, shrink, die or even worse, it will mutate into something ugly and potentially dangerous to your business.
  5. Organizational culture is unique to you and it can’t be bought, stolen, or copied. As a result it can be a competitive advantage that sets you apart from your competition.
